D.I.Y. Green Spring Cleaning Solutions

Spring Cleaning usually means picking up a cocktail of harmful cleaning products from the supermarket to blast the dirt and grime away.  Have you ever read the active ingredients on the labels of those cleaning products? They often sound like a crazy science experiment or a totally foreign language.

There is a safer alternative for your spring cleaning regime that’s also more cost effective.

Here are our 6 Top Green D.I.Y. cleaning solutions:

1. All Purpose Cleaner

As the name suggests, this cleaner can be used on a variety of surfaces. Here’s what you need.

  • ½ cup White Vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp Baking Soda (Bi-Cab Soda)
  • 10 drops essential oil
  • 500 ml water

Mix the ingredients and transfer to a spray bottle to clean countertops, mirrors, windows, stoves, just all around the house. The vinegar and baking soda in the solution are very effective at loosening dirt while the essential oil adds a pleasing aroma.

2. Tile Cleaner

In the kitchen, tiles can get greasy while bathroom tiles are prone to soap scum. Try using this solution.

  • ½ cup Baking Soda (Bi-Carb Soda)
  • Some Castile Soap
  • 10 drops of essential oil
  • Water
  • Lemon (sliced in half)

Mix baking soda, castile soap, essential oil and some water in a 16oz spray bottle. Spray it on the tiled areas and let it sit for a few minutes. Use the sliced lemon to scrub and agitate the solution into the floor. Then rinse and wipe with a clean cloth.

3. Grout Cleaner

People somehow equate tough cleaning with bleach. Bleach is strong stuff, so strong that it can cause rashes, burns and skin ailments. Grout can be really hard to clean, but you can do a great job with this solution:

  • Baking soda (Bi-Carb Soda)
  • 1 cup White Vinegar
  • 1 cup Water

Mix the water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Sprinkle some baking soda on the grout lines and spray with the water and vinegar solution. As soon as it starts bubbling, start brushing using an old toothbrush then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

4. Furniture Cleaner

An amazing furniture cleaning solution!

  • 10 drops Pure Lemon Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • A few drops of Olive Oil
  • Water

You can mix this in a bucket and dab a microfiber cloth in the solution or you can have it in a spray bottle. Either will work as long you use a microfibre cloth. Wipe over your furniture and watch the dust and dirt disappear.

5. Toilet Cleaner

It’s very important to clean and disinfect toilets to get rid of stinky odours and prevent bacteria from breeding.

  • ½ cup Baking Soda (Bi-Carb Soda)
  • 1 cup White Vinegar
  • ½ Tsp Tea Tree Oil

Mix vinegar and tea tree oil in a spray bottle and spray generously inside the bowl, lid and toilet seat. Leave it for several minutes then dump the baking soda (Bi-Carb Soda) in the bowl. Use a toilet brush to scrub in and around the toilet bowl.
