How to Make DIY All-Natural Cleaning Solutions: A Step-by-Step Guide

Published on Mar 23, 2023

guide to making natural cleaning solutions

Making your own cleaning solutions is cost effective and better for the environment.

Plus, they’ll do a fantastic job on most cleaning tasks around the home.

These are 3 of our favourites.

What are the benefits of cleaning naturally?

What are the benefits of cleaning naturally?

These are just a few of the fantastic reasons why you should think about switching to mostly natural cleaning products.

  • These recipes are non-toxic, meaning they’re safer for your family and the people in your household.

  • Less chemicals and less packaging means better for the environment.

  • Avoid the costs of having many cleaning products.

  • They’re still just as effective as commercial products for many of your chores.

What are the best natural cleaning ingredients?

Like any great recipe, the ingredients are the key.

What are the best natural cleaning ingredients?

Here are some of the natural cleaning ingredients you should gather before you begin. You may already have many of these in your pantry or fridge already!

Vinegar

White vinegar’s acidity means it can be used on a variety of jobs around the home to cut down grease and grime deposits, while doing a great job of deodorising.

Lemons

This citrus fruit has been known for a long time for its natural cleaning prowess due to its antibacterial properties and high acidity.

It also smells deliciously fresh, too!

Baking Soda

As a mild alkaline, baking soda reacts with water to break down grease. It’s also a gentle abrasive, effectively scrubbing stubborn grime from porous surfaces.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are quite safe when used properly, non-toxic and many of them have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

They can also infuse a delicious scent in your home while cleaning with them.

Here’s a delectable peppermint shower spray recipe to try.

Some recipes may also call for using dish soap. While this addition will make your concoction a little less natural per se, it complements the other ingredients really well on certain tasks.

How do you make a powerful cleaning solution using natural ingredients?

We’ve been researching natural do-it-yourself cleaning products and their uses for some time – there are some great options out there!

How do you make a powerful cleaning solution using natural ingredients?

Recipe #1: Vinegar + Water

This is a simple one to begin with.

Combine a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use this on your windows and shower screen.

For an extra kick, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

Recipe #2: Baking Soda + Water

This is another easy one that is just so effective as a natural cleaning product.

We mostly recommend using these two items together when cleaning your drains or your grout lines.

Pour boiling water down your drain, then pour half a cup or so of baking down and around the rim of the drain. Let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing with more boiling water.

For your grout lines, simply create a baking soda and water paste, with a toothpaste-like consistency. Put it on your grout lines and let it sit for half an hour before scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

Recipe #3: Vinegar + Water + Tea Tree Oil

This mix is a mould fighter.

Combine 10 drops of tea tree oil, vinegar and water in a glass spray bottle. Shake and spray onto the affected area, leave for 20 minutes and wipe.

This mix works well on smaller mould infestation and is a much safer (and more effective!) alternative to bleach. Here’s why we DON’T recommend you clean your mould with bleach.

Recipe #4: Baking Soda + Water + Dish Detergent

These three ingredients have some superb cleaning power. These are just a couple of ways that you can use these together to achieve a fantastic result.

Pots and Pans

Generously sprinkle baking soda on your pots and pans, add hot water and a light squirt of liquid dish detergent. Your best bet is to leave it overnight and then you should be able to easily scrub the pan in the morning.

Oven

Combine dish detergent, baking soda and salt together to create a paste and use it on the interior of your oven. Depending on how dirty your oven is, leave for at least an hour (you may need to leave it overnight). Lightly sponge the paste and grime away and give it a bit of a scrub if need be.
