4 Quick Ways to Save Cash in The Kitchen

The ever-increasing cost of living is hitting Australian wallets hard.

Everyone is looking for ways to cut costs on their household budget.

We have some quick tips to save some easy cash in your kitchen – here they are!

How Can I Save Money in My Kitchen?

Making a few changes to how you run your kitchen can save you a lot of money in the long run. It’s all about taking more sustainable steps while saving yourself some cash, too!

1. Be Waste Wise

Bew Waste Wise

We could all be a little smarter when it comes to how we’re preparing food.

Putting some thought into how you’re shopping, cooking and storing ingredients can certainly put some extra money in your back pocket.

Here are a few things to try.

  • Keep an eye on bulk items at the supermarket and cook up double batches of meals where possible, storing extras in the freezer for quick weeknight meals.
  • Making even just a little extra is handy for having leftovers for lunches through the week. It’s also helpful if you have a dog, too – they love leftovers, and it may mean money saved on dog food if you’re serving up leftovers instead.
  • Organise your pantry! Having a well organised pantry means it’s a lot easier to see exactly what you have in there and avoid doubling up when you shop. I found three packs of self-raising flour the last time I cleaned out my pantry!
  • Think about growing your own food as well. A little bit of time and money invested could reward you with your very own grocer in the backyard.

2. Upsize!

Upsize

One of the best things you can do to save money in the kitchen is to buy bigger sizes of non-perishable items.

While it will cost you in the short term, the money saved, and convenience factor makes it all worth it.

Keep an eye out for sales and do your sums.

Buying a 2L bottle of tomato sauce on sale for $3.75, for example is a win. When a single 500ml bottle is $3, that’s a big saving! Having one less thing you have to buy during your weekly shop (that 2L bottle will last a lot longer) is a win for convenience too.

3. Shop Online

Shop Online

Get with the times and embrace online shopping.

The major supermarket websites have some handy tools to help you get the most out of your grocery budget.

  • Specials usually start each Wednesday but both Coles and Woolworth release a ‘sneak peek’ catalogue the Monday prior. This is a great way to shape your meal plan for the following week based on what’s on special.
  • Make the most of rewards programs.
  • Search for specific items so that you ensure you’re always getting bang for your buck.
  • Don’t be afraid of generic brands. They’re much better than they used to be … tastier than the brand name varieties in some instances!

4. Make Your Own Cleaning Products

The savings you can make in the kitchen aren’t all food related.

As the home of the cleaning product cupboard, more kitchen savings can be made on commercial cleaning products – theses can get expensive, especially when you have a different one for each chore around the home. A trip to the supermarket cleaning aisle certainly gets confusing and costly!

What if we told you that you could tackle a lot of the tasks in your home with homemade cleaning products, which can be just effective at a fraction of the cost.

Gather these items together for natural cleaning power.

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Lemons
  • Essential oils of choice
  • Glass spray bottle
  • Microfibre cloths

Not sure where to start? This natural cleaning kit advice will get you on your way. From cleaning grout lines, to tackling toilets and stubborn grime on a variety of surfaces, a combination of the above items packs a seriously powerful cleaning punch.

Our blog has plenty of natural cleaning ideas, with step-by-step guides to get the most out of your natural cleaning products.

We also recommend moving away from using paper towels to clean, and use cloths and old rags instead. Not only are these better for the environment, but they’ll also save you money on regularly buying paper towels as well.

Just think of the money you’ll save!
