But if the carpet isn’t cleaned regularly, it can fill up with dirt and grime, and become ‘clogged’. Then, instead of filtering your air, the carpet releases pollutants back into the air when walked on. This really isn’t ideal, especially if you have kids playing on the carpet!
So how do you keep the ‘filter’ working well? Vacuuming your carpet weekly works wonders, and will help the carpet not get clogged with dirt. Regular vacuuming also helps prolong the carpet’s life, as coarse dirt grinds against the carpet fibres, wearing them down over time.
But to really ensure your carpet is clean and keeping your air healthy, it’s necessary to get it professionally cleaned once a year. The method used to clean your carpet plays a huge role when it comes to walking on your carpet after cleaning. If your carpet has been dry cleaned, it should be walk-on dry virtually straight away and totally dry within 1-2 hours. However, if your carpet underwent steam cleaning, it will take much longer to dry, usually 6-8 hours. Further to this, there are several other factors that affect how long it will take for your carpet to dry. This includes the type of carpet, for example, wool or nylon, how dirty or soiled the carpet is and the temperature or humidity of the climate.
Carpet dry cleaning is a process where the carpet surface is pre-vacuumed and then treated with solvents to break down dirt within its fibres. Once this treatment takes place, machinery uses cotton pads that spin around on top of your carpets removing stains or soil attached to the fibres making it easier to clean. The main benefit is that it is walk-on dry immediately and only takes 1-2 hours to fully dry.
On the other hand, steam cleaning works by using special equipment which injects water into the carpet under high pressure and then removes it. This method is similar to a vacuum cleaner however, instead of using air to suck up debris, it uses hot water. Once the water has been extracted from the carpet, it takes all the built-up grime and dirt from the carpet with it. However, this method can take 6-12 hours for your carpet to fully dry.
A spot usually occurs as a result of a spill or an accident and can usually be removed straight away. However, if not removed immediately, or successfully, a stain can be formed. A stain is more permanent and may change the colour of the carpet fibres over time, and can be much more difficult to remove. This is why it is important to clean up any spills immediately so that you can minimise the chances of them developing into permanent stains on your carpet.
