Why Bare Feet Aren't Best for Carpet

Electrodry Carpet Dry Cleaning technicians will do just about anything to keep their customers happy. Occasionally though we get some requests that we just can’t honour. One of the most common is that every now and then, a customer will ask us to do the job with bare feet. The customer may never wear shoes on the carpet themselves – it may be a “leave your shoes at the door” kind of house or they see work boots on our technician’s feet and assume that they will be dirty.

 

Is it ok to walk barefoot on carpet?

Bare feet, contrary to popular belief, are not the best option for your carpets. Your feet shed body oils and dead skin. The oils sink into the carpet and then attract dirt which sticks to the oil. This then causes a stain or traffic mark. The shed skin attracts bacteria and dust mites.

That aside, our technicians like to please their customers but they need to wear their shoes for workplace health and safety reasons.

 

Why won't carpet cleaning technicians take off their shoes?

1. Slip hazards – the exclusive cleaning solutions that are used by your Electrodry technician will be sprayed all over your carpet and they make the base of your feet slippery. This is why your technician will lay old towelling on the entry and exit points from the carpeted area to areas that have hard flooring. So that feet can be wiped before stepping on to hard floors like tiles, floorboards or lino, reducing the chances of slipping.

2. Burn risk – heat is an essential component of the Electrodry Carpet Dry Cleaning process. Your technician will set up a bucket near a power source that contains a small amount of water and cleaning solution. This bucket will be heated to boiling point and burns are a real risk. If the technician was in bare feet potential damage by burning would be dramatically increased as his process includes soaking large round pads in this hot water solution and attaching them to the Electrodry equipment to clean you r carpets.

3. Risk of injury to feet – the technicians carry several pieces of heavy equipment about and bare feet would mean risking injury if they dropped something on their toes.

4. Bare feet slow down the job - In addition to the occupational health and safety reasons, there is the matter of simple inconvenience and slowing down the job. The technician will move back and forward from his van quite a number of times during the process. If he had to stop and put his shoes on and off each time, the job would take too long and end up costing the customer more.
