Easy to Follow Tips To Lounge Area Perfection

Also known as the living room, the lounge area is considered by many as a vital hub in the home. We get to spend movie marathons, hours of video gaming, entertaining guests, and that much-needed relaxation when we long for some peace and quiet and lose ourselves in a good book.

With the amount of time the whole family spends in the lounge area, it's important to keep things neat, healthy and organized. You also want to make an awesome impression as you entertain guests, business partners and throw the occasional party.

Think about it, dead skin and body oils on the cushions. Food crumbs and spilt drinks on the couch, and even the dreaded sofa pizza stuck in between the cushions! And an insane amount of keys and remote controls that you get dizzy thinking about what they're for.

From choosing the best pieces of furniture, carpeting and rugs to have everything clean and neatly organized, it hardly seems that the lounge room is such a relaxing prospect to take on. Fortunately for you, we have compiled some of the best tips out on the internet to help you achieve lounge area perfection without too much pain and anguish. So read on because we got you covered.

Banish Unsightly Marks from Your Wood Furniture with These Homemade Remedies

Visible marks (water rings, white marks, stains, etc.) on the floor, table, desk, bureau, or coffee table can be an eyesore – in some way, a mute and constant reminder of one’s own carelessness and lack of foresight...

– if left unattended for long. Good thing there’s an array of simple remedies for that. You can deal with this pesky problem by using a variety of solutions in order to remove those ugly discolourations, which can be attributed to pizza boxes, wet bottles and soda cans, glasses, bowls, or any other hot or cold item that has been left to stand (unwiped!) on the wood surface for far too long. The key to these quick fixes is that you don’t necessarily have to search far and wide to get hold of the things you will need for this task. You can make use of common household substances such as baking soda, oil–vinegar mixture, or mayonnaise, or you can simply use a hairdryer by holding it over the affected area at low heat setting.

Three Ways to Deodorise Your Carpet

We want our homes to look good and be a great place to live in, but this can be a bit difficult to achieve when musty-smelling carpets keep ruining the atmosphere. Good thing there are several remedies that you can try to tackle this “smelly” problem. So what causes...

carpets to smell anyway? Actually, carpet odours can stem from several causes. Fortunately, for every potential cause, there is a corresponding specific solution. For example, one likely source of the unpleasant smell is your pet(s). For this type of problem, one can use a pet odour remover (e.g., E-Pet Odour Eliminator), then follow it up by pouring club soda on target surfaces and using a carpet cleaning machine to round the whole thing off. Another likely culprit is smoke odour, for which baking soda (followed by vacuuming) is recommended. As for mildewy carpets, first you can dry out the carpets by installing a dehumidifier in the room and then use floor fans (angled downwards) to help speed up the process. After drying, slightly spray the carpets with a vinegar solution; then wait for it to dry up.

Remove Animal Hair from Carpets and Furniture with a Squeegee

If you have pets that shed hair like there’s no tomorrow, then you’re going to love this hack because all you need is a window squeegee (yes that’s right, a squeegee). You can easily remove animal hairs embedded in your rugs, carpets and furniture by...

running a rubber, run-of-the-mill squeegee over these surfaces. The process can be a bit time-consuming (depending on the size of the area you want to cover), but many users insist that the squeegee does the job admirably well, because it draws out even hairs that are deeply and stubbornly entrenched in the carpet.

Simply run the squeegee over your carpets and furniture (yes, you can use it in your car upholstery, too). After a few minutes, you’ll be surprised at the amount of animal hair you have managed to rake in. If you plan to cover harder-to-reach areas, be sure to attach a longer handle (e.g., an old mop handle) on the squeegee as this will allow you to finish the job much more quickly; for larger areas, you can also use the larger variant for convenience.

Use Baking Soda to Give Your Fabric Sofa a New Lease on Life

Okay. So your fabric sofa, which still looks fine by all accounts, is starting to give off an embarrassing odour and it’s getting increasingly harder to ignore the smell as time goes on. You don’t want to give up on it because you have...

gotten used to it and it matches the rest of your decor, but you can’t help dreading what your guests would say. Well, fret not. There is still a way for you to salvage your treasured sofa with a homemade remedy that won’t necessarily burn through your wallet. All you need is lots of baking soda, which has excellent absorption properties, and a vacuum cleaner. First, sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda on your couch; let it stay for an hour before vacuuming it all off. For best results, you can follow this up by applying a generous coating of an odour-eliminating scent and wait until all the moisture dries up (which can take hours). Until then, the sofa should be off-limits to everyone. Lesson: Always have baking soda on hand for emergencies like this; also note that if you’re not satisfied with the results, you can always call in professional help.

Organising Tips for A Clutter-free Living Room

A clean and well-organised living room is a pleasure to come home to, regardless of how your day went. However, this busy area can get cluttered pretty quickly, so every now and then a serious effort to declutter and clean would be...

in order to turn your living room into an oasis of calm and serenity. One way to keep things streamlined is to place your electronic appliances and devices (TV, music systems, players, recorders, DVDs, CDs, etc.) in the same area with their attendant wires/cables, adaptors, and remote controls so as to minimise their intrusive presence (e.g., inside a custom coffee table or a painted cabinet) when not in use. Make use of bookcases, storage drawers, ottomans, as well as decorative chests and boxes/baskets as containers for books, magazines, toys, accessories, and other items. Designate a mail centre where all mails, bills, receipts, flyers, etc. are kept and sorted, and dispose of junk mails promptly. (Check out Ideal Home for more details on how to pull this off.)

Also, try to make an effort to reduce the clutter at regular intervals (daily, if possible) so things don’t pile up to an unmanageable degree and eventually dissuade you from doing the task altogether.

make the most of what you have to get that “roomier” feeling without having to spend a small fortune on renovations or hefty new purchases. You can make your small living room feel a bit more spacious through the judicious use of mirrors and wallpapers. While you’re at it, consider ditching your full-size and bulky furniture and opt for smaller, versatile ones instead; specifically, use those (ottomans, benches, coffee tables) with built-in storage. If your living room happens to have a high ceiling, take advantage of this by stacking artwork and wall decors vertically to give off the impression that the room is larger and grander than it really is. In addition, plants offer a great way for you to add depth and a dash of colour in your living room. Note that plants work particularly well when placed in corners and beside or behind chairs and sofas.

Picking The Right Sofa for The Living Room

Picking out the right upholstery for your family room is an important decision for which several factors should be considered. Aside from budget issues and personal preferences, other considerations — dimensions, family...

needs, quality, style, comfort, and cleanability — should be kept in mind, too. The family room is a multipurpose area where family members usually gather to indulge in R&R and other activities, and like most family-oriented rooms its focal point is typically anchored on a sofa. So picking the right upholstery is crucial when setting up the family room, and generally the choice comes down between leather and fabric. Aside from budget issues and personal preferences, other factors that you need to consider when choosing the right couch are its dimensions (the size of your sofa in relation to room size), your family’s needs, quality, style (how it matches or accentuates the rest of your room decor), and comfort level. And because it is likely the largest furniture in the room, another important issue is where to place it (balance, traffic patterns, breathing room).

to plan, design and layout compared to a compact bedroom or living room. You need to practice a bit more imagination to pull it off. But when you do, it’ll be an amazing feat!

Sleep Tight (and Right) with These Nifty Bedroom Hacks

Unlike other rooms in the house where utility and multiple priorities are streamlined to serve a more unified function, bedrooms are areas where personal preferences are given free rein. Basically, your bedroom is your own designated territory within the house, a place where the stamp of your identity is unquestioned and your choices are the ones that matter. Depending on the family circumstances (size, age of family members, and economic resources), a typical dwelling unit usually has at least one up to several bedrooms, each one reflecting the outlook and character of its occupant(s). So, the last thing you should expect is for these rooms to have the same exact needs, looks, and level of cleaning required.

As a rule, bedrooms don’t receive a lot of traffic, but they do tend to be used far longer by their occupants. As such, the rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected especially when you’re dealing with children’s bedrooms, because these are basically high-maintenance areas where many “messy” incidents can happen (food spills, vomit, pee, pet stains, etc.) and mess can ensue at lightning speed.

Because bedrooms are our sanctuary, we do our best to make them as clean and safe as possible, and to create a restful and comfortable atmosphere. It’s not something that you can easily achieve overnight, but here are several articles to help you navigate your way towards a clean, well-organized, and comfortable bedroom.

Keep Your Home Smelling Great with DIY Reed Diffuser Room

Keep your home (especially your bathrooms and bedrooms) smelling fresh and clean by making your own reed diffuser using natural ingredients. It’s time to throw away those commercial chemical-based air...

fresheners and make use of homemade reed diffusers and essential oils to imbue certain areas of your house – such as bathrooms, closets, litter box areas, shoe racks – with therapeutic aromas. Reed diffusers are safe, cleaner and better alternatives to synthetic fresheners because they don’t contain aerosol, don’t radiate smoke or heat, don’t leave wax or ash behind, and will keep your house smelling fresh for more than 3 months. They also make good decorations. To make your own diffusers, you are going to need the following: reeds (which can be bought online), a funnel or bottle, essential oils, carrier oil, and vodka. For the optimal essential oils/carrier oil combination, it is recommended to use a 70% essential oils/30% carrier oil blend. Begin by mixing the carrier oil, essential oils and vodka (in a bottle or funnel); swirl the mixture gently. Place reeds in the bottle and leave them for about 1 hour; next, flip the reeds so the dry ends are now immersed in the oil. Note: Keep flipping the reeds every week continually until it’s time to replace both reeds and mixture (when there’s no more scent).

Organize Your Way to A Clutter-Free Bedroom

Your bedroom is your domain, your sanctuary, a place where you relax, reflect, and recharge so you can be ready for the next day’s grind. So it goes without saying that you would want an environment that’s as conducive to...

rest as possible. Get into the right mindset by removing unnecessary clutter and organizing your stuff so as to minimise stress and stimulants that might ruin your chances for a good night’s sleep.

First, think minimalism when it comes to furniture and decor (too many knick-knacks and furniture can make your room look smaller). If possible, keep your work out of the bedroom; if you have to work at home occasionally, designate a separate place for that. Avoid hoarding. Reorganize your closet; keep only those items (clothing, shoes, jewellery, bags, etc.) that you need, and give away, sell, or donate the rest. Avoid piling and draping clothes where they shouldn’t be – either hang them or put them in your laundry basket. Keep your shoes in a shoe rack or in their boxes. And while you’re at it, you can also utilise the space under your bed for extra storage or make use of bare walls for shelves.

For a more restful sleep, make sure that your mattress and carpets are cleaned thoroughly. The same goes for your curtains, bed linens, and window blinds. You might also to want keep certain plants in your room – they’re great air purifiers and fabulous as ornamental add-ons.

Space Saving Hacks for Small Bedrooms

Just because you have a small bedroom doesn’t mean you have to make do with a crowded, messy room, cramming every available inch of space with your stuff. Here are several tips to help you make the best use of...

the space that’s available to you.

You can start by choosing a bed frame and/or a headboard that can accommodate drawers for extra storage space. Shelves – overhead, floating, stacking, or wall shelves – will help you save space and organize your things; you can also place a shelf above your door. For other types of furniture, pick out those – ottoman, benches, desks, etc. – that can do double duty as storage containers. If you do need a desk but don’t have enough space for it, perhaps a fold-down desk will be more appropriate for your needs.

Make use of bare walls and corners by placing a clothes rack in these areas. Optimise your closet space with pegs, racks, and hooks for your coats, slacks, bags, shoes, belts, ties, etc. Place inserts inside your drawers to keep your things neat and organised.

Additionally, you can hang your laundry hamper behind your bedroom door and utilise woven/fabric baskets as containers for your miscellaneous clutter.

Common Mistakes We Make With Our Airconditioners

If you own an air conditioner (AC), you know they can be an absolute godsend during hot, scorching summers. However, you might be making any one (or several) of these mistakes without being aware of it and unknowingly ...

jeopardising your family’s health and jacking up your utility bills in the process.

How could this happen? Mostly through negligence or ignorance, it turns out. If you have forgotten or chosen not to have your AC filters cleaned or changed regularly (change filters at least once every 3 months), then the ball is in your court. This becomes even more of an issue if you are using your AC system continuously. Other mistakes include not having your AC units serviced annually, not taking full advantage of fans, lack of programmable thermostats, setting your thermostat too low, poor positioning of thermostat or vents, absence of blinds or curtains, and cooling empty or unoccupied rooms.

Having your ACs cleaned regularly will not only lower your electricity bills (a grimy filter can increase your AC bill by 5–15%), it will also make them more effective and efficient (and thus lengthen their service life), and — more importantly — safer for your health.

So, you wonder what to do next, because in the back of your mind you know that indoor mould growth in general is potentially harmful (especially in bedrooms where people usually spend most of their time) and should be immediately removed. Well, don’t hit the panic button just yet, because there are many mould experts out there who would be glad to help you deal with your mould problem. They would also willingly tell you what do and what NOT to do to ensure that moulds won’t readily find welcome again in your house.

Lastly, if you’re curious about the source of this problem, note that there are two common causes: airborne moisture (warm moisture-laden air interacting with a cool ceiling, causing condensation, which then leads to mould growth) and liquid moisture (e.g., plumbing failures, roof leaks).

Tips to Making A Small Bathroom Look Bigger

If you have a small bathroom, then illusion is one of your best allies. It’s not necessarily an outright effort to deceive, but rather a clever attempt to redirect attention from the fact that you have a limited amount of space to work with. One effective...

option at your disposal is to place mirrors in strategic locations – the bigger and the more of them, the better – because they give the illusion of depth. Enhance your efforts by using lighting (natural if possible) and light-coloured items to brighten the atmosphere and give the impression of a larger room.

To optimise the limited space, you can opt for a sliding door and install built-in shelves or open vertical shelves on bare walls; or better yet, carve storage niches on your exterior walls. Choosing pedestal-type sinks or a floating basin and vanity design will leave you with more storage space. Another option is to use woven baskets, magnetic board, stacked plate holders, wine holders, jars, older boxers, etc., to hold and organize your stuff.

When choosing the right material for your floor tiles, note that large tiles work well in small bathrooms – the smaller number of grout lines creates the illusion of a bigger space. If possible, use the same tile pattern and adopt a monochromatic colour scheme for the entire room because this leaves an impression of continuity and therefore a more expansive feeling; opt for clear glass when partitioning off your shower area so as to allow light in and minimise visual contrast.

Picking Out The Right Tiles for Your Bathroom

Choosing the right tiles for your bathroom is not exactly an exact science, but it helps if you already have some ideas about it. Mind you, it’s not just about the overall appearance (size, shape, colour, material, finish)...

– other factors be considered as well (grout, budget, light, room size, preferences).

Basically, the size, shape, and layout of the room will affect the size and shape of your tile. During the planning stage, you will already have a good idea of where your cabinets, bathroom fixtures, mirrors, etc., will be located, so this gives you a rough estimation of the surfaces that will require tiling. Consider the proportion of the tile(s) you want to use in relation to the size of the room; don’t forget to factor in grout lines in your plans, because they, too, are an important part of the whole shebang.

Ensure that the style, colour, and finish of the tile(s) you select will complement the style of your bathroom and fittings. Note that lighter-coloured tiles work well if there is minimal or zero natural light coming in, as they are more reflective and will brighten up the room; conversely, if your bathroom receives a lot of natural light, you should using avoid high-gloss tiles because they are too reflective and create glare.

Tips on How to Clean A Glass Shower Door

Cleaning your glass shower door regularly sounds like a tedious chore. However, when you consider the alternative — accumulation of hard water and soapy build-up on glass shower surfaces can lead to etching...

and cause permanent damage to the glass, and may also be the reason for the cloudy look on your glass shower door — it makes perfect sense to wipe down your shower with a squeegee or a microfibre cloth after each use.

A squeegee is an excellent and handy tool for cleaning or removing something (e.g., water, pet hair) from a surface. Meanwhile, a microfibre cloth works great against water spotting and build-up; it’s also quite useful for accessing difficult-to-reach areas such as tight corners and below door handles.

After the wipedown, wrap things up with a quick misting of daily cleaner. If you’re not a big fan of using a chemical-laden shower spray, you can always go online and look for suggestions on how to make your own.

Another great thing about cleaning your shower daily is that you won’t have to do as much deep-cleaning as you did before and the glass will still remain shiny. Considering that the ingredients required for this little DIY project aren’t all that difficult to round up, making that choice should be fairly easy, right?

Tips For An Energy Efficient Bathroom

One effective way to achieve energy efficiency in the bathroom is to decrease the amount of water that goes there. Reduce water usage in the bathroom by almost 50% by simply switching to specific types of...

plumbing fixtures.

While some of these fixtures can carry a hefty retail price, they do pay off rather quickly because of the savings they bring in terms of lower water and electricity bills. For example, when shopping for plumbing fixtures, try to opt for high efficiency shower heads and faucets, because they have lower water flow rates (look for newer models). Adding aerators to your faucets (high pressure, reduced flow) will also drastically reduce your water consumption. Select low flow toilets; if you don’t have the dual-flush variant, you can also install a flush convertor, which enables you to adjust the settings as needed. Use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of incandescent bulbs, and try to avoid overlighting when using the bathroom.

Also, avoid water wastage by checking your fixtures and fittings regularly for possible cracks, drips, and leaks.

in order.

Here are 4 easy ways for you to clean your tub and remove those ugly stains. First, get your rubber gloves and your cleaner ready. Then, we move on to cleaners. Your first choice is a commercial cleaner (your choice). Read and follow the instructions carefully to ensure that you are using the right product for the task you have in mind. Another choice is baking soda, which is mixed with hydrogen peroxide and can be used for all types of tubs. Next is vinegar, which is suitable for porcelain tubs. Mixed with water, vinegar works well in removing hard water stains and soap scum. You can also use shampoo, which is good in removing soap scum and will make your chrome taps shiny.

Some people like doing a load every morning so that they can easily fold a smaller number of clothes by bedtime.
