Cleaning a toilet can be a downright nasty job.

But knowing the correct way to clean a toilet can make this task a little easier.

These are our top toilet cleaning tips.

How Do You Clean a Toilet Properly?

Determining the correct way to clean a toilet has some straightforward elements, but there may be some things you’re forgetting to do.

This method is for your regular, once a week, toilet clean. We have instructions for a badly stained toilet bowl a little further down in the blog.

  1. Apply your toilet cleaner of choice to the bowl, being sure to carefully squirt it all around the rim and underneath the rim itself.
  2. Let it soak for around 10 minutes.
  3. While it’s soaking, give the exterior a wipe down with a multipurpose cleaner that includes a disinfectant, ensuring that you don’t miss any areas or crevices. Remember the back and base of the toilet, too!
  4. Time to grab your toilet brush and give the entire interior a good scrubbing.
  5. Let the solution (everything should have bubbled up by now) sit for another 5 minutes or so before flushing!

Consistency is the key here. Unless something ‘disastrous’ has happened, cleaning your toilet regularly will make the process much easier each time.

Does Vinegar Damage Toilet Bowls?

Vinegar is a great toilet cleaning alternative because of its antibacterial, antifungal or deodorizing qualities. We do however recommend using bleach for your clean at least once every few weeks, or if your toilet is in particularly bad shape.

Aside from what some people think, vinegar won’t harm your toilet’s tank, bowl, or inner components. It’s safe, it’s quite effective and it will do a great job.

You should be able to treat a badly stained toilet bowl with this natural method.

Pour a cup of white vinegar into the bowl and scrub it around with your toilet brush. Add a cup of baking soda and another half a cup or so before leaving to soak for an hour.

Flush and give it another scrub if need be. We’ve already discussed the powers of white vinegar while baking soda is an abrasive cleaner, which is why it works so well with staining.

You should be repeating the 5-step process in the previous section once you’ve completed this method.

Should you clean your toilet brush?

You absolutely should! Think about it. You give your toilet a thorough clean, collected all sorts of things on your brush before promptly placing it back into its enclosed holder, letting it sit there for a week or so before you use it again!

A couple of pointers here:

  • Use gloves and immerse your holder in a bucker of boiling hot water and bleach, before using an old scrubbing brush on it.
  • Don’t forget to disinfect the holder as well.
  • In between uses, keep the top of the holder slightly ajar, meaning your brush gets a chance to aerate.
